An intimate toccata evoking the deep stirrings of new life

The word "quickening" dates from medieval times, referring to the first stirrings of a fetus within the womb, when it was believed to have come to life.

In this evocative 4-minute piece for prepared piano, the performer creates the illusion that deep resonances are emanating from within the body of the piano, and that both performer and audience are witnessing these faint, distant murmurs.
