Interior Music

Inspired by our bodies' music: Heartbeats and Breaths

This imaginative chamber work takes its inspiration from the "music" that our bodies create simply by being alive: heartbeats and breaths.  This colorful 10-minute work weaves together music with a steady pulse and music driven by gestures and waves of sound - by turns determined, playful and luminous.

The title of each movement is drawn from a poem (see excerpts below)

Movements:

1. ...the interior music, waking
2. ...it mambos the blue volts through my body
3. ...all your bones humming and buzzing
4. ...behind the ribcage, the gears that won't give up
5. ...the heavy grooves keep turning

The fourth movement scherzo, ...behind the ribcage, the gears that won't give up, may be performed separately.

Poetry excerpts

Patrician Goedicke, Nancy White, Nancy Cox, Neal Bowers

1.
...in the familiar fields
of the head
the interior music, waking
collects itself into small fluent eddies
piled up against the fence of morning.

2.
Big as a knee socket,
this mare-muzzle, jittery as the
kitchen timer, it mambas the blue
volts through my body.

3.
You are the vibrating instrument:
all those resonant spaces
to fill in your head,
all your bones humming and buzzing...

4.
Another day of small engines running--
in the icebox, behind the ribcage--
the gears that won't give up,
and the tiny valves.

5.
As sleep slowly winds down
the heavy grooves keep turning
languidly on the pillow

and what symphony has been conducting itself here
or quartet, or jazz solo
